Fréret, Nicolas. - Defence of chronology based on the monume - Lot 102
Fréret, Nicolas. - Defence of chronology based on the monumens of ancient history, against the chronological system of Mr. Newton. Paris, Durand, 1758. In-4, bound in full contemporary calf, boards decorated with a double gilt fillet and fleurons, spine ribbed and decorated, title-pieces, gilt edges - binding damaged (jaws cracked, headbands damaged) - [2 ff. ], LV pp. (preface by de Bougainville), 506 pp. and [2 pp. errata]. At his death, in 1749, Fréret had still not published his refutation of Newton's chronology. It was M. de Bougainville who undertook to publish it under the auspices of the Académie Royale des Belles Lettres. The preface he wrote deals, on the one hand, with the context in which M. Fréret was led to undertake the writing of his treatise in 1729 and, on the other hand, with his plan, his method and his results. Attached: [d'Holbach] - Boulanger. - L'Antiquité dévoilée par ses usages, ou examen critique des principales opinions, cérémonies et institutions religieuses et politiques des différens peuples de la terre. Amsterdam, Marc Michel Rey, 1772. 3 volumes in-12 bound in full tan calf with smooth spines, title-pieces - headbands faded with loss of leather in T 3, first bit split in T I, corners pierced, spidermoor.
