Charles Malfray (1887-1940) - Lot 153
Charles Malfray (1887-1940) Torso of a Swimmer 1936 Original gum-lacquered plaster Unsigned 12 x 17.5 x 7 cm "In 1936, he completed [...] a Torse de Nageuse (Torso of a Swimmer), which is perhaps the finest piece to have come out of his hands [...]. The audacity of the conception, the vigorous frankness of the movement, the ardent sensuality of the work astonish and seduce. [...] In this perfect work, Malfray, by making the head and neck a little heavier, knows how to leave the flavor of a truthful awkwardness that can only ever be found in the great masters". Jacques de Laprade, Malfray, Paris, Fernand Mourlot, 1944, p. 27-28. Examples in public collections: Lyon, Musée des Beaux-Arts (1949-11) Paris, musée national d'art moderne (AM 940 S, on deposit at La Piscine, musée d'art et d'industrie André-Diligent) Bibliography : - Charles Malfray (1887-1940), sculpteur, cat. exp., Paris, galerie Malaquais, April 5 - June 30, 2007, Paris, Galerie Malaquais, 2007, n°20, p. 122-123, repr.
