Manuel Martinez Hugué, known as MANOLO (1872 - 1945) Man with castanets, 1930 Brooch Silver proof H. 3.2; L. 6.7 cm Provenance Barcelona, private collection Bibliography: Montserrat Blanch, Montserrat, Manolo, Sculptures, Peintures, Dessins, Éditions Cercle d'Art, Paris, 1974, n°292, p.151 (print from Thermalia Museum, Caldes de Montbui) Two other silver proofs are known to date: - Caldes de Montbuy, Thermalia Museum, Mas Manolo collection - Barcelona, National Art Museum of Catalonia. The Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya holds other brooches by the artist similar in composition. (Venus in front of her mirror, Woman playing the harp, Bust of a man). Spanish sculptors Julio Gonzalez, Pablo Gargallo, Francisco Durrio and Manolo Hugué were very active in jewelry-making in Paris in the early 20th century. Their aesthetic was strongly influenced by Art Nouveau and then Art Deco. From the 1910s onwards, Manolo's jewelry-making became less frequent. He resumed this activity around the 1930s, offering his creations to his wife Totote and his adopted daughter Rosa.
