After Edgar Degas (1834-1917) - Lot 113
After Edgar Degas (1834-1917) Head, first study for the portrait of Madame S. Model created between 1882 and 1895; Hébrard cast Signed "degas" on the back Numbered "7/G Bears the founder's stamp "A.A. HEBRARD CIRE PERDUE". H. 14 cm, on a bronze base H. 7 cm This is the first head study for the portrait of Mathilde Salle, dancer at the Opéra from 1888 to 1919. A pastel portrait of Mathilde Salle is dated 1886, but correspondence between the sculptor and the dancer, written in August 1892, attests that Degas was working on clay heads. In 1917, when Degas died, one hundred and fifty sculptures were discovered in his studio. A number of these were in very poor condition. For those deemed to be in suitable condition, the heirs signed a publishing contract in 1918 with the foundryman Adrien-Aurélien Hébrard. In all, seventy-four sculptures were cast in bronze. Two series were reserved for the heirs and the founder. Anne Pingeot's catalog raisonné of Edgar Degas' sculptures lists two studies for the portrait of Madame S. cast by Hébrard, numbered "7/G". One is in the National Gallery of Art, Washington (inv. 1995.47.16), and the other was part of M. Werner's collection in Cologne from 1968 to 1999.
