Henri Chapu (1833-1891) Portrait of Ferdinand Barbedienne (1810-1892) Small life-size bust in bronze with light-brown patina Signed "H. Chapu Bears the founder's mark "F. BARBEDIENNE FONDEUR Paris". H. 16 cm, on a red and green marble base H. 9.4 cm Henri Chapu presented a marble portrait of Ferdinand Barbedienne at the 1882 Salon. More than a foundryman, Barbedienne was one of the most important patrons of nineteenth-century statuary. He maintained close ties of friendship with the sculptors with whom he collaborated. In 1889, many of them, including Henri Chapu, signed a petition to have him awarded the cross of Grand Officer of the Legion of Honor. The monument to Ferdinand Barbedienne created by Alfred Boucher and Henri Chapu in the Père Lachaise cemetery is surmounted by a bronze copy of the bust exhibited in 1882.
