[How Charles V came to the aid of the King of Tunis, driven out by Barbarossa]. S.l.n.d. [late 16th - early 17th century] - 8 plates (approx. 24.5 x 33.5 cm) in an oblong folio volume, in 19th-century hardback (damaged). Extremely rare suite of 8 plates engraved by Franz Hogenberg (1535-1590), comprising a title with a very fine frame and 7 prints engraved after drawings by Jan Cornelisz Vermeyen (c. 1500-1559) recounting the capture of Tunis by Charles V in 1535. The Flemish painter Vermeyen accompanied Charles V to Tunis in 1535, from where he brought back numerous drawings, from which he made twelve cartoons depicting the capture of Tunis. These were used to create the famous tapestries woven by Guillaume Pannemaker, commissioned by Marie de Hongrie, then Regent of the Netherlands at the request of Charles V, and of which 10 pieces still survive in Madrid. Hogenberg later produced these 7 engravings, which are derivatives of Vermeyen's cartoons. They were first published in Cologne between 1570 and 1590. The engravings here are from an early print run and have been glued on strong paper and bound in a modern binding. Although the plates have been cut flush with the bowl, the legends printed at the bottom of each engraving have been preserved in their entirety.
