[Martinique] Chedeville, A. - Martinique 1836. 1 oblong albu - Lot 197
[Martinique] Chedeville, A. - Martinique 1836. 1 oblong album bound in black half-chagrin. - Boards scuffed, corners pierced, serpents pricked, small marginal tears. - 16 graphite drawings heightened with white chalk on tinted Pellée paper, most monogrammed AC and dated 1836 or 1837. Added is a drawing signed E. Capmartin and dated 1862 depicting the Gueydon canal at Fort Royal, and two watercolors representing Fort de France for one, and Bellevue, the governor's residence for the other. Alexandre-Louis Chedeville (1807-1897), a former student of the Ecole Polytechnique, was appointed Director of Shipbuilding in Lorient and Brest in 1858. From December 1835 to December 1837, he took part in an observation mission in the West Indies under the command of M. de Mackau. It was undoubtedly on this occasion that he produced the drawings in this album. Produced on Pellée paper, an invention of François Pellée of Nantes, which he patented in 1844, these finely executed drawings are captioned as follows: Fort-Royal, Au bord de la mer, Bellevue, La Savane, Ste Anne, Cascade de la rivière Monsieur, Anse Bellevue, Pont Cartouche, Bamboula, Anse Bellevue, Route du Jardin des Plantes (St Pierre), St Pierre, Route des Pilons, Une case à Nègres, route des Pitons, Route des Pitons six heures du matin, Hopital de la marine rivière Madame. There is a contradiction between the date of 1836 or 1837 indicated on the drawings and the date of 1844 also indicated on Pellée's dry stamps. Could the drawings have been made retrospectively from sketches made prior to the manufacture and marketing of Pellée paper?
