Paucton, (Alexis-Jean-Pierre). - Métrologie ou traité des mesures, poids et monnoies des anciens peuples des modernes. Paris, Vve Desaint, 1780. In-4 bound in full contemporary calf, spine ribbed, title-piece - headbands faded, headbands split, leather missing and repaired, epidermis - XIII pp. (title, dedication, plan of the work), [1 p. table], 955 pp. (with table), [1 p. errata], 6 pp. (sentence rendered at the Châtelet de Paris on 11/08/1778 - Arrêt de la cour du Parlement du 10/02/1779). First edition of Métrologie savante by the mathematician Paucton (1736-1798), a fundamental work in the history of measurement. The introduction deals with the definition of measurements in general, their usefulness in commerce and the arts, measurement legislation in France, and decimal and logarithmic calculation. The thirteen chapters deal successively with the measurement of time and length, surveying measurements, capacity measurements for liquids and grains, weights, currencies, interest, discount and insurance calculations, statistics concerning states and populations, the quantities of flour and bread produced by a given measure of wheat, the quantities of seed to be used for various cereals, and finally currencies and their valuation. The work concludes with eleven tables providing lists of measures country by country, city by city, with their value in Paris units and the logarithms of these conversion coefficients. A distinctive feature of this treatise is that it calls for systematic calculations using decimal numbers and logarithms, which is uncommon in works of this type.
