Armand Gesner (1936-2008) Cows Isorel panel Signed upper right 60.5 x 50.5 cm Armand Gesner, an illustrious Haitian painter, began his artistic journey at the Centre d'Art under the tutelage of Pierre Monosiet, who taught him watercolor. Between 1958 and 1960, he spent time in Mexico, and in 1960 received a grant from the French government to live in Paris until 1962. On his return to Haiti, he settled in Croix-des-Bouquets and became director of the Musée d'art haïtien at Collège Saint-Pierre. With art studies in Paris and Mexico, Gesner achieved international renown, exhibiting his work in Haiti, the United States, Mexico, France, Spain, Jamaica, Martinique, Venezuela, Barbados, the Dominican Republic, Guadeloupe and Israel. His paintings, famous for their vivid country scenes and depictions of pigeons, reveal a Mexican influence in his still lifes, while deeply expressing his love for Haiti.
