Sisson Blanchard (1926-1981) Birds Isorel panel Signed lower right 40.5 x 60.5 cm (Stains) Blanchard Sisson, born in Trouin, Haiti in 1926 and died in 1981, is a remarkable Haitian painter. He began his artistic career at the Centre d'Art in 1949, initially employed as a court boy. It was there that he was encouraged to paint by the American sculptor Jason Seley. Sisson is known for his boldly naive style, marked by the use of bright primary colors to depict birds and still lifes. His work has gained international renown, including prestigious collections at the Davenport Museum of Art and the Waterloo Museum of Art in Iowa. Before the 1970s, Sisson was considered one of the most mature and influential Haitian artists of his time.
