Émile Antoine Bourdelle (1861-1929) - Lot 51
Émile Antoine Bourdelle (1861-1929) The cellist on the column or Music Bronze with light brown patina Signed " BOURDELLE " on the base Bears the mark of the founder " ALEXIS RUDIER FONDEUR PARIS ". H. 30 cm This Cellist on the Column brings together two inspirations dear to Émile An- toine Bourdelle: music and classical art. The sculptor tackled the first theme in a series of bas-reliefs for the façade of the Champs Élysées theater in 1912. Among the allegories he tackled, a plaster study entitled Music features a cellist (Montauban, Musée Ingres, inv. MI.54.8.1). Then, between 1914 and 1916, Bourdelle produced two series of aqua- relles dedicated to Orpheus playing the lyre and Winged Centaur playing the lyre.
