René LETOURNEUR (1898-1990) - Lot 173
René LETOURNEUR (1898-1990) Bust of Lucie Schumann 1979 Plaster 48 x 27 x 26 cm Lucie Daniel (1920-2014) married statesman and writer Maurice Schumann (1911-1998) in November 1944, when both had just taken an active part in the Resistance on French soil. René Letourneur and Maurice Schumann met just after the Liberation, thanks to Jean Rosenthal, a member of the Resistance and a friend of the sculptor. It was only natural that René Letourneur should create a portrait of Madame Schumann. A patinated terracotta of this clay bust, given to the Schumann couple, and two plaster casts, including the one shown here, exist. Bibliography : 2009 EXHIBITION, p. 221.
