René LETOURNEUR (1898-1990) - Lot 109
René LETOURNEUR (1898-1990) La Liseuse, model for the stone high relief of the Jean Jaurès school complex in Poissy (Yvelines) 1970-1971 Carrara marble Unsigned With base: 18 x 29 x 6.5 cm Two old restorations The relief for the Jean Jaurès school complex in Poissy was René Letourneur's last public commission as part of his 1% artistic contribution. The sculptor made two proposals: the first depicted a woman wearing a long skirt and carrying a torch (see cat. no. 171), and the second a nude Liseuse. For the latter, which was chosen, he carried out numerous studies, testing different compositions. In the end, it was a relief structured on two planes, with a partly openwork background, that he carved directly in stone. Laid out on the lawn in front of the school building, La liseuse plays with its surroundings. Bibliography : 2009 EXHIBITION, p. 221.
