René LETOURNEUR (1898-1990) - Lot 101
René LETOURNEUR (1898-1990) Model for La Jeune fille 1970 Original plaster 45 x 14 x 9 cm La Jeune fille, a 182 cm-high stone executed in direct carving, stands in front of the Point du Jour school building in Alençon. Compared to the scale model, its forms have been greatly enlarged to meet the requirements of the slightly larger-than-life scale. René Letourneur used to explain that the human body, while equipped with fine attachments to enable movement, cannot be transcribed in stone in this way. Stone must both suggest movement and respect the constraints of monumentality. The sculptor is executing this work as part of a public 1% artistic commission. Bibliography : 2009 EXHIBITION, p. 91, no. 74, repr. (large stone) and p. 221.
