René LETOURNEUR (1898-1990) Maternity ward 1936 Stone Signed (lower left) : LETOURNEUR 94 x 51 x 33 cm With base: 90.5 x 61.5 x 46 cm Traces of restoration (lower left) Maternité displays the plastic language characteristic of the 1930s: the figures adopt a hieratic calm, reinforced by large, highly legible planes. The direct-cut work reveals the initial shape of the block from which the group emerged. La Maternité was featured in the exhibition L'Atelier du sculpteur René Letourneur organized at the Musée de l'Île-de-France in Sceaux in 2009.
