René LETOURNEUR (1898-1990) - Lot 4
René LETOURNEUR (1898-1990) Portrait of tennis player Henri Cochet 1929 Original plaster 51 x 22 x 22 cm Minor damage to base Henri Cochet (1901-1987) became world tennis champion in 1928. The following year, he posed for René Letourneur, one of his training partners. The sculptor drew inspiration from Henri Cochet's features for the portrait of Simon Bolivar in the monument to the great Venezuelan politician in Quito (Ecuador). René Letourneur and Jacques Zwobada won the competition for this monument in 1929. The size of the base of Henri Cochet's portrait corresponds to the aesthetic of the 1920s-1930s. Bibliography : 2009 EXHIBITION, p. 19-23, nos. 4, 5 and 6.
