René Babin (1919-1997) - Lot 239
René Babin (1919-1997) La Grenade - Small model 1966 Bronze proof with golden patina Lost-wax casting Signed on the terrace "R. Babin". Numbered on the side 1/8 Foundry stamp Attilio Valsuani 19 x 12 x 14 cm Base in Belgian black marble: 4 x 6 x 13 cm La Grenade - Petit modèle, more rough-hewn than the Grand modèle, has less massive proportions and softer lines. "La Grenade, as he chose to call it, is like one of those splendid fruits about to bloom. The bust, moved to the point of releasing in its wild ripening a sensation of chili pepper, has the brilliance of these forms gorged with sap." (Patrice Dubois, René Babin, Paris, Assurances Axa, avenue Matignon, October-November 2001, p. 2). Born in Paris in 1919, René Babin entered the École des Arts Appliqués in 1935 and attended Robert Wlérick's sculpture and Charles Malfray's drawing classes for three years, where he made friends with Raymond Martin, Jean Carton and Simon Goldberg. He exhibited regularly at the Salon des Indépendants, the Salon d'Automne and the Salon de la Jeune Sculpture. In 1964, Babin is invited to take part in the first Groupe des Neuf exhibition at the Galerie Vendôme. His work was shown in two major international exhibitions: Six Sculpteurs Européens at the Bianchini in New York in 1959 and an exhibition in Stockholm in 1970, with Charles Auffret and Gudmar Olovson. "A man of modesty and little inclination towards confidences, René Babin had a predilection for these compact forms, in which the blossoming of the masses and the melody of the curves are in themselves a way of expressing a whole inner life made up of silence, restrained emotion and trembling." (Dubois, Patrice, René Babin, sculpture exhibition, Paris, Axa Assurances, avenue Matignon, October - November 2001).
