Georges Hilbert (1900-1982) - Lot 185
Georges Hilbert (1900-1982) Antique Horse and Rider 1943 Limestone Signed and dated on the left edge "HILBERT 43". 25.5 x 30 x 10 cm Minor edge damage. In 1943, when he created Cheval et Cavalier, Georges Hilbert was at the peak of his art. In 1931, he joined the Groupe des Douze, a group of sculptors founded under the aegis of François Pompon. In 1937, he took part in the Exposition Universelle in Paris, before joining the Académie des Beaux-Arts. Cheval et Cavalier (Horse and Rider) holds a special place in his animal work: Hilbert usually depicts the animal alone, rather treated in round-bosses that play with part of the block left rough. This delicate relief creates a human-animal dialogue that contrasts with his other works. Born in 1900 in Nemours, Algeria, Georges Hilbert entered the Oran School of Fine Arts in 1918. That same year, however, he moved to Paris, where he continued his studies at the École des Arts Décoratifs and the École des Beaux-Arts. It was mainly at the Jardin des Plantes, in front of the animals, that he developed his drawing skills. He then made direct cuts in blocks of limestone, granite or marble. Specializing in animal sculpture, Hilbert joined the Groupe des Douze created by his friend François Pompon in 1931. He worked alongside other animal sculptors including Charles Artus, Marcel Lémar, Jeanne Poupelet and Paul Jouve.
