Jean Ary Bitter (1883-1973) Polar bear bookend Edition Susse circa 1935 Pair of bronzes with green-brown patina One is inscribed in a cartouche "ARY BITTER Sclpt / SUSSE FRES EDRS PARIS". H. total 24 cm and 25 cm Originally from Marseille, Ary Bitter entered the École des Beaux-arts de Paris in 1902. There, he trained with Ernest-Louis Barrias while working in Jules Coutan's studio. In 1910, he took part in the Salon des Artistes français, where he was awarded a gold medal in 1924. Susse published twenty-nine of Bitter's designs during the interwar period, including his highly successful Elephants.
