Charles Malfray (1887-1940) - Lot 149
Charles Malfray (1887-1940) Silence with rock, 1916 -1918 Terracotta proof from the artist's lifetime Monogrammed on the terrace lower right "Ch. M.". 9 x 7 x 5.5 cm Executed at the front during the First World War, Le Silence is a poignant, symbolic portrait of soldiers in the trenches. Indeed, with a clear economy of plastic means, this huddled figure deals with the horrors of war: it evokes the posture taken by soldiers when shells hit their trenches. The power contained in the "block" of this sculpture would become one of Malfray's stylistic hallmarks. Le Silence is undoubtedly one of the sculptor's earliest masterpieces. Examples in public collections: Paris, Musée National d'Art Moderne (AM 938 S) Orléans, Musée des Beaux-Arts (998-18-1) Bibliography : Charles Malfray (1887-1940), sculpteur, cat. exp., Paris, galerie Malaquais, April 5 - June 30, 2007, Paris, Galerie Malaquais, 2007, p. 84-87, repr.
