Emile Antoine Bourdelle (1861-1929) - Lot 105
Emile Antoine Bourdelle (1861-1929) The cellist on the column or Music Circa 1920 Bronze with brown patina Signed "Bourdelle" on the terrace Bears the founder's mark "ALEXIS RUDIER FONDEUR PARIS". H. 30 cm This Violoncelliste sur la colonne brings together two inspirations dear to Émile Antoine Bourdelle: music and ancient art. The sculptor tackled the first theme in a series of bas-reliefs for the façade of the Champs Élysées theater in 1912. Among the allegories addressed, a plaster study entitled La musique features a cellist (Montauban, Musée Ingres, inv. MI.54.8.1). Then, between 1914 and 1916, Bourdelle produced two series of watercolors dedicated to Orphée jouant de la lyre and Centaure ailé jouant de la lyre.
