Auguste Henri Carli (1868-1930) - Lot 98
Auguste Henri Carli (1868-1930) Sketch for L'esprit et la matière Original terracotta Signed "A. Carli Height 40 cm Damage and missing parts For the plaster L'esprit et la matière, Marseille-born Auguste Henri Carli, a pupil of Jules Cavelier and Ernest Barrias, was awarded a first-class medal at the 1902 Salon des Artistes Français. He donated this first version to his hometown museum, and presented a monumental marble version commissioned by the city of Clermont-Ferrand at the 1911 Salon. Our original terracotta is probably a first thought for the final work. There are a few variants, and while the attitude of the man embodying Matter, clutching the allegory of Spirit, is still present, the latter has its wings spread and its left hand resting on the man's right shoulder. Related works: -Auguste Henri Carli, L'esprit et la matière, 1921, marble, H. 320 cm, Clermont-Ferrand, place Michel-de-l'Hospital ; -Auguste Henri Carli, L'esprit et la matière, 1920, bronze, cast by Susse Frères, Paraguay, Piribebuy.
