Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi (1834-1904) - Lot 66
Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi (1834-1904) Allegory of Goldsmiths Statuette in bronze with brown patina Signed "A BARTHOLDI H. 11.2 cm Minor wear to patina In 1860, Auguste Bartholdi was commissioned to create a monument to the memory of German painter Martin Schongauer to adorn the cloister courtyard of the former Unterlinden convent, then converted into a museum. The monument, sculpted in the style of Gothic fountains, is surmounted by a full-length figure of Schongauer surrounded by four allegorical figures embodying the stages of his training: Engraving, Study, Painting and Goldsmithing. Our bronze statuette is modelled on this last allegory, which is thought to be a self-portrait of the sculptor. The fountain was dismantled in 1958, and the four figures deposited in the Bartholdi Museum.
