Buste de bébé endormi was originally a study for the group Parisienne allaitant (Paris, Petit Palais, inv. PPS298), exhibited in marble at the Royal Academy Salon in London in 1872. It can be found in other compositions by the sculptor, notably the Berceuse and the Monument aux petits-enfants de la Reine Victoria. The model for this charming bust was produced in marble during the artist's lifetime, and in bronze by the Hébrard foundry, according to a contract drawn up by the heirs in 1902.
