Constantin Meunier (1831-1905) - Lot 62
Constantin Meunier (1831-1905) The Hammerer Model created circa 1886 Bronze with brown patina Signed "C. Meunier" on the terrace Numbered "55" on the edge of the terrace H. 47 cm, on a red marble base H. 7.5 cm A close associate of Auguste Rodin, Constantin Meunier brought miners, harvesters and blacksmiths, representing the working class, into the realm of sculpture. Le Marteleur is part of Meunier's oeuvre, which can be characterized as "social art", like the Sower and Miner series, the first examples of which were shown at the 1886 Salon, just one year after the publication of Zola's Germinal. The monumen- tale plaster figure of Le Marteleur aroused public and critical enthusiasm, as attested by an article by Octave Mirbeau in La France. In view of its success, the model was published in bronze in its original size (200 cm) and in smaller versions (117.5 cm and 50 cm high).
