Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux (1827-1875) - Lot 58
Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux (1827-1875) The Fisherman with a Shell n°1 Model created in 1857 Bronze with red-brown patina Signed "J.B Carpeaux Sc". Stamped "PROPRIETE CARPEAUX" with imperial eagle H. 92 cm Although made in Rome in 1857, our bronze model was inspired by the memory of a young boy on a Neapolitan beach observed by the sculptor a year earlier. Very realistically executed, this child wearing an empty shell on his ear is Carpeaux's homage to Francisque Joseph Duret's Jeune pêcheur dansant la tarentelle and François Rude's Pêcheur napolitain jouant avec une tortue presented at the 1829 Salon. The anecdotal subject, imbued with a lively, cheerful naturalism, breathed new life into nineteenth-century sculpture. Le Pêcheur à la coquille was produced in bronze by the studio from 1872 and by the Susse foundry between 1920 and 1939. Related literature: -Michel Poletti, Alain Richarme, Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux, sculpteur. Catalog raisonné de l'œuvre édité, Paris, Les Expressions contemporaines, 2003, model listed under no. SA 9, p. 63
