Harp with rich carved, polychrome and gilded decoration of caryatids, scrolls of laurel leaves, flowers, scrolls, pearls and twisted ribbons. Table and body decorated in Martin polychrome and gilded varnish on a black background with Chinese figures and musicians, birds and butterflies. Stock with two glass windows. 38 strings; hook mechanism. 7 single-movement pedals. Attributed to Jean-Henri Naderman (1735-1799). H. 166 W. 60 D. 77 cm A family heirloom, this harp is said to have belonged to the Princess of Lamballe. Jean-Henri Naderman, harpist, luthier and composer (active from 1734 to 1788) made and perfected the Dauphine's harps on her arrival in France. He became the Queen's luthier in 1778. The instrument's success spread to the Court (Madame Adélaïde, Madame Victoire, the Princesse de Conti, the Princesse de Lamballe...). References - a harp by Naderman, circa 1780, with a comparable structure and oriental decoration on a black background, has a crossbow-shaped pedestal front (Lissier collection, Cagnes-sur-Mer). - Princesse de Lamballe harp. Unknown maker, possibly J.H. Naderman. Decorated by Vien and Bachelier (Philharmonie de Paris, Museum collection; former Louis Clapisson collection).
