Tommaso MAZZA (ex Master of SANTA VERDIANA) (active in Florence, Pisa, Prato from 1377 to 1392) The Virgin and Child Altarpiece panel. Egg painting and gold ground on rectangular panel, top in third point. Inscription at the bottom of the panel, signature reinserted in the modern frame and badly repainted: AC OPUS FECI. FIE. DNS IONNS PRI. ISTUS. ECCLS (sic) Lord Jean, (provost?) of the church commissioned this work. Restoration. 85 x 52 cm Provenance: Albin Chalandon (1809-1885) collection, Parcieux, Ain. Always remained in the family. Following Miklos Boskovits, recent critics agree that Tommaso del Mazza is the identity of an artist previously known by the conventional name of Master of Santa Verdiana or Master of the Coronation of the Louvre, working in Florence around 1370-1395. Condition: panel cut in the lower part, median crack visible on the front. Another crack visible on reverse. Frame not original. Reverse reinforced with several wooden boards. Painting surface: wear and restoration.
