Nicholson, William. - An Alphabet. London, William Heinemann - Lot 319
Nicholson, William. - An Alphabet. London, William Heinemann, 1898. In-4, publisher's illustrated boards, narrow cloth spine, red edges - headpieces missing, corners worn, stains on first board, some foxing on flyleaves and endpapers, book slightly unbound - [27 ff.]. Illustrated covers, title vignette and 26 full-page woodcuts. At the end of the volume, advertising leaflet for "An Almanac of twelve Sports", again illustrated by Nicholson. First edition. Each letter is represented by a typical social figure of the time, and the work begins with a self-portrait of Nicholson as an Artist. Also: Countess, Dandy and Earl, and representatives of the people: Beggar, Milkmaid... William Nicholson (1872-1949) was one of the brilliant artists who participated in the woodcut revival of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and it is significant that he chose a Xylograph to represent the letter X. A good copy despite the minor flaws noted, with no foxing on the plates.
