Berque, Jean. - Apocalypse of Saint John. Paris, Imprimé par - Lot 295
Berque, Jean. - Apocalypse of Saint John. Paris, Imprimé par Philippe Gonin [pour Berque], 1932. In-4 leaves in typographed cover, folder (stained and damaged), slipcase, bookplate of Robert de Billy - 105 pp. (the last n.ch.), [1 p. blanche, 1 p. d'achever, 1 p. blanche]. Illustrated with cover, 19 h-t, 17 in-t, 2 culs-de-lampe. Edition of 18 copies on Japon, numbered and signed (no. 17). In the justification: "The compositions that adorn this work are by my hand". An exceptional work. Not to be confused with the print run of 160 copies from 1938, published by Gonin frères in Lausanne, which includes only 12 woodcuts h-t. The catalog for an exhibition devoted to Berque, held at the Galerie de la Renaissance, rue Royale, Paris, May 15-24, 1931, lists 51 paintings, drawings, 2 books (L'Offrande Lyrique by Tagore and Connaissance de l'est by Paul Claudel) and the model for Apocalypse. It's safe to assume that this copy was one of those shown at the exhibition. From 1925 onwards, Jean Berque began to devote much of his time to book illustration. From 1930 to 1939, with the exception of 1931, he illustrated books for Philippe Gonin in Paris, and for the Gonin brothers in Lausanne.
