LOTI (Pierre). Prime jeunesse. Sequel to Roman d'un enfant. - Lot 282
LOTI (Pierre). Prime jeunesse. Sequel to Roman d'un enfant. Paris, Calmann-Lévy, s.d. [1919]. In-8, [4] uncounted ff. - 268 pp. covers preserved, LAS and envelope inserted on leaves after title. Bound in dark green half-maroquin, 5-ribbed spine, gilt lettering, marbled paper boards, endpapers and countersleeves. Some foxing, spotting. Spine unstained. First edition. Untrimmed copy. Copy numbered 932 on papier vélin du Marais (edition of 1,000 copies). Enriched copy with a signed autograph letter (LAS) from Pierre Loti to Albert Montel, dated Hendaye, February 3, 1893, 1 page, envelope retained: "I have just read, Sir, your review of the new play at the Théâtre Lyrique. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for having said such fine and charming things for me in passing". Written as a sequel to Roman d'un enfant, Prime jeunesse is one of the great texts in which Pierre Loti explores his youth without resorting to fiction. It is dedicated posthumously to his sister Marie, the lively, passionate woman who was raised as an artist (but married into a provincial family), and who encouraged Loti in his artistic and literary vocation, giving him useful advice.
