Lucain- Juvenal- Perse. Collection of two works: - Lot 252
Lucain- Juvenal- Perse. Collection of two works: 1/- Lucanus, Venetiis apud Aldum mense Aprili MDII, 132 ff. n. ch., signed a-r8, s4. 2/- Juvenalis, Persius, Venetiis in aedibus Aldi, mense Augusto MDI, 78 ff n.ch., signed A-G8, H10, a8, b4. 1 volume in-8 bound in full calf, cold-stamped with vertical foliate scrolls on the first board, foliate scrolls framing two bands of vertical foliate scrolls in the center of a rectangular frame formed by two triple fillets on the lower board, traces of clasps, ribbed spine cold-stamped with foliate scrolls, contemporary binding. - The upper cover has been skilfully rebound, one corner very slightly pierced, 1 leaf cut in the lower corner (f° a iii of Lucain). - The incipits of both works were illuminated, probably as early as the 16th century, for a member of the d'Albon family, a wealthy Lyon family whose coat of arms is recognizable as Sable with a golden cross, inscribed in a triumphal hat. The illuminations have been transferred to the facing page, introducing a curious and involuntary mirror effect. Early marginal annotations in pink ink, trace of a handwritten bookplate on the first leaf of the Juvenal: "Johanne Holzhemi Abstemii. Bononie". According to A.A. Renouard's Annales de l'imprimerie des Alde, Juvenal et Perse is one of the first four volumes printed with the italic typeface invented by this great typographer, after the volumes of Virgil, Horace and Petrarch, published the same year, 1501. It should be noted that the volume has 78 leaves and not 76, as Renouard erroneously announced, failing to see that the H section has ten leaves and not eight. For Lucain, the basis of this edition is that of Venice 1493 with commentaries by J. Sulpitius, except for the corrections Aldus was able to collect from the old and good manuscript which, in his preface, he announces was entrusted to him by Antonio Mauroceno, to whom the volume is dedicated. A fine copy in good condition.
