France, Anatole. - Speech given by A. France at the banquet - Lot 244
France, Anatole. - Speech given by A. France at the banquet given in his honor by "l'Art pour tous" on 4/04/1908. Three leaves handwritten on the front in ink with erasures and overprints (23 x 17.8 cm). The 3 sheets are presented in a frame with protective glass (35 x 69 cm). "...It is not, alas, the spectacle of the present hour that can give us much joy, pride and hope. All is obscure and troubled, a spirit of vertigo and error has seized ruling democracy. It seems as if a thick cloud hides the terrible social reality from people. They think they've said it all, and done it all, by denying the class struggle; the very people who seem to reject the very idea of it are tonight giving the sinister signal... I want to believe that the day will come when, in a society better ordered than ours, everyone will enjoy the fruits of their labor in peace. Then Art will truly be for all, and you, dear comrades, will have completed your work".
