Cano, Melchior. - Opera, Quorum elenchum vide pagina sequent - Lot 226
Cano, Melchior. - Opera, Quorum elenchum vide pagina sequente. Cum duplici Indice, altero, rerum ac Sententiarum, altero, locorum Sacrae Scripturae in hisce passim expositorum. Lyon and Paris, Amable Auroy, 1704. In-4 bound in full contemporary calf, spine ribbed and decorated, red title-piece - tail cap shaved, head cap torn and reglued, 2 small wormholes at tail of spine, 2 corners pierced, some scattered freckling not serious, tear with small paper loss on penultimate page - [8 pp.], 816 pp., [34 pp.]. The "de Locis Theologis" occupies pp. 1 to 615. The second part is mainly devoted to the sacrament of penance. Cano (1509-1560) was a Spanish bishop, Dominican friar, theologian and philosopher. His main work, "De Locis Theologicis", published in Salamanca in 1563, renewed the way in which theology was conceived, approaching the subject from the angle of "theological places", which for him were "the domiciles of all the arguments of theology", i.e. the sources of theology. He distinguished ten of these for theological demonstration: Holy Scripture, apostolic tradition, the authority of the Catholic Church, the authority of ecumenical councils, the authority of the Supreme Pontiff, the doctrine of the Church Fathers, the doctrine of theologians and canonists, human rational truth, the doctrine of philosophers and history.
