[Brittany - Plouha- Chardin] - Chardin, Paul (1933-1918). - Fantaisies. Oblong album (24.5 x 33 cm) bound in brown half-chagrin, spine ribbed, gilt author and title, titled in gilt letters "Album de Kéravel" on the front cover. The work is made up of sheets of strong paper on which are pasted 126 drawings by Paul Chardin, to which are added 14 drawings on loose sheets. The 140 pieces are divided as follows: 113 pen drawings and 2 pen and wash drawings; 19 watercolors; 5 black pencil drawings and 1 colored pencil drawing. Among the pen drawings, 4 are indicated as having been sent from besieged Paris by balloon mounted at Kéravel (10-11-12/ 1870 and 01/1871). Apart from 19 drawings relating to the war of 1870-71 (including the 4 mounted balloons and 8 watercolors depicting Prussians), the album retraces the life of the Rhoné family on the Kéravel estate in the commune of Plouha (Brittany) over the period 1870-1877. The Kéravel estate, built in 1870, was the summer residence of 3 families: the Rhoné family, an Egyptologist and industrialist from Paris (Anzin mines), the Chauvy family (a senior civil servant) and the Bernard family (a lawyer from Rennes), who were joined by numerous friends and neighbors. Life at Kéravel was full of joy and humor, which Chardin (future husband of Sara Rhoné) caricatured under the nickname "Peinturlure". This gallery of portraits, most of them Bretons, includes the Rhoné family (Rhoné parents, children Arthur and Sara, grandchildren Jean, Suzanne and Fanny Rhoné, uncle and aunt Armet de Lisle, old cousin Virginie), the family of B. Chauvy and his children Cécile and Étienne, close friends Paul Gasnault and Dr. Pignard, who seemed to be at every party, and their many neighbors such as Henri and Charles de Taillart (châtelains de Périmorvan en Pludual), Auguste Chaumont (from Plouha), M. and Mme de Courson and their children, Georgette and Aurélien (château de Lisandré), Nordelet (Plouha notary), Montjaret (Plouha tax collector), the Mesle du Porzou, the Marquis de Coislin, the Dowager Countess de Tréveneuc and Countess Henri de Tréveneuc. Under Chardin's vigorous pen, life is joyful at the estate, where costumed performances follow the ups and downs of community life. Social life is also present, with a lively scene at the Plouha agricultural show on 09/30/1872, or a dinner at Dollo's in Lanvollon.
