Marcel DAMBOISE (1903-1992) - Lot 130
Marcel DAMBOISE (1903-1992) Medallion of Albert Camus, 1961 Studio plaster with traces of shellac Signed and dated: Damboise 1961 D. 50cm Inv. MD-S-031G-00k Provenance: Artist's studio, by descent The two artists met in Algiers in 1934, at an exhibition at the Villa Abd-el-Tif: Damboise, aged 31, exhibited there as a boarder; Camus, aged 21, went as an art critic for a newspaper. A friendship developed between them, fueled by a love of the Greeks. This friendship continued until Camus's fatal accident in 1960. After Camus's death, Damboise created medallions and a bust to celebrate his memory. One of the medallions, in stone, adorns a monument to Camus erected in Villeblin in the Yonne, the commune where his sudden death occurred. Bibliography: - Gabriel Audisio, "Marcel Damboise: Sculpteur de Marseille", Marseille, Revue Municipale illustrée, n°67, second quarter 1967, pp. 16-17 (bronze copy).
