Marcel DAMBOISE (1903-1992) Medallion of Albert Camus, 1961 Workshop plaster with patina Signed and dated: Damboise 1961 Faded inscription: Albert Camus 1913 1960 D. 45 cm Inv. MD-S-031G-00m Provenance: Artist's studio, by descent Poor condition Marcel Damboise and Albert Camus met in Algiers in 1934, at an exhibition at the Villa Abd-el-Tif: Damboise, aged 31, was exhibiting as a boarder; Camus, aged 21, was there as an art critic for a newspaper. The friendship between Damboise and Camus continued until the writer's fatal accident in 1960. After Camus's death, Damboise created medallions and a bust to celebrate his memory. One of the medallions, in stone, still adorns a monument to Camus erected in Villeblin in the Yonne department, the commune where his sudden death occurred.
