IMPORTANT AND ORIGINAL UKRAINIAN BESSARABIAN RUG Wool velvet on wool foundations decorated with the myth of Medea and Jason and a fable by La Fontaine: The Wolf and the Dog. Gilded yellow field with a highly original representation of the two themes, adorned with a large central medallion featuring a polychrome flower crown inlaid with a shepherdess and her sheep. Four spandrels decorated with horns of plenty and finely drawn bunches of flowers. Triple border, the main one bluish-gray, decorated with beige twisted crenellated foliage. Worked and woven in the tradition of Savonnerie carpets. Accents, wear and natural oxidation. Mid-19th century. 406 x 345 cm
