Emmanuel Frémiet (1824-1910) Trapped elephant Model created in 1878 Bronze with brown patina Signed "E. FREMIET Bears the number "19 H. 16.5 cm terrace 12 x 5.6 cm In 1877, Emmanuel Frémiet was commissioned to create a monumental plaster sculpture of a bison for the 1878 Universal Exhibition. The sculptor eventually delivered an elephant caught in a trap for the Trocadéro waterfall basin. Following the destruction of the Trocadéro in 1936, the group was moved to the square at Porte de Saint-Cloud. For the bronze edition, the model underwent a number of modifications, including the removal of the wheel holding the trap and the monkey, and the rope now holding the left hind leg.
