Although trained as a painter in Ary Scheffer's studio, Auguste Bartholdi turned to sculpture with Jean-François Soitoux. His first success came in 1854, when he won the competition for the monument to General Rapp launched by his native Colmar. Under the Second Empire and Third Republic, he was often called upon to create monumental sculptures as part of major urban projects. The Lion of Belfort and the Statue of Liberty are his most famous works.
