Marcel Damboise (1903-1992) - Lot 76
Marcel Damboise (1903-1992) Albert Camus medallion 1961 Studio plaster Signed and dated: Damboise 1961 Inscribed on the rim in pencil: "Albert Camus 1913-1960". D. 45 cm Provenance: artist's studio by descent MD. S-031G-00j Bibliography: Gabriel Audisio, "Marcel Damboise: Sculpteur de Marseille", Marseille, Revue Municipale illustrée, n°67, second quarter 1967, pp. 16-17 (terracotta example). The two artists met in Algiers in 1934, at an exhibition at the Villa Abd-el-Tif: Damboise, aged 31, exhibited there as a boarder; Camus, aged 21, went as an art critic for a newspaper. A friendship developed between them, fueled by a love of the Greeks. This friendship continued until Camus's fatal accident in 1960. After Camus's death, Damboise created medallions and a bust to celebrate his memory. One of the medallions, in stone, adorns a monument to Camus erected in Villeblin, Yonne, the commune where his sudden death occurred.
