Aristide Maillol (1861-1944) - Lot 28
Aristide Maillol (1861-1944) Lying Woman, study for the Port-Vendres monument circa 1921 Lacquered gum plaster 24.9 x 42.5 x 8.9 cm Provenance : Pierre Matisse; Pierre-Noël Matisse; Jacquelyn Miller Matisse This rare plaster proof of Femme Étendue, a version of which, probably in terracotta, is reproduced in John Rewald's illustrated work, bears traces of shellac, suggesting Maillol's intention to publish it. We thank Monsieur Lorquin for his opinion. For Monsieur Lorquin, it is a foundry plaster. Related literature: John Rewald, Maillol, Éditions Hyperion, Paris, 1939, ill. p. 84 (repr.)
