KONO BAMBARA MASK, Mali - Lot 197
KONO BAMBARA MASK, Mali Wood with crusty patina, native fabric. Damage. H. 66 cm Important Bambara mask, the helmet surmounted by a central lug, two long horns curving at the top, while an open, toothed muzzle stretches the object. The crusty patina attests to the numerous and ancient libations performed. This mask, with its strong presence, belongs to the group of objects used in the rituals of the Kono initiation society. It embodies all the characteristics of animal power, with the menacing mouth representing the devouring force. A fine example of the type.
