Agba Igala mask, Nigeria - Lot 143
Agba Igala mask, Nigeria Wood and traces of polychromy H. 35 cm Superb conical mask-helmet featuring a face covered with a multitude of ritual scarifications and incisions. The finely detailed headdress is composed of small braids thrown back and small buns arranged on the top edge. Agba masks were performed at festivals, in particular at aku, an annual ceremony commemorating men who had died during the previous year if they had received the title of amanwulu or ibena during their lifetime.
