Pair of Afo or Igala statues, Nigeria Wood H. 35.5 cm and 41 cm Provenance: El Hadj Sambo Bassirou (Lomé, Togo); Galerie L'Accrosonge (Paris) These statues, from the Lower Benue region, can be attributed to the Afo or Igala peoples. They represent a couple standing upright, their arms largely detached from their bodies, their hands clearly digitized, the woman's wrists adorned with pearl bracelets. The bodies are covered in a thick ritual patina of finely flaked blood, partially obliterating the facial features but lending the sculptures a particularly mysterious presence.
