Lwalwa mask, Democratic Republic of Congo - Lot 49
Lwalwa mask, Democratic Republic of Congo Wood H. 25.5 cm Provenance : - Brought back in the 1930s by Mr. Pierre Rocaglia on the occasion of a mining prospecting campaign in the Congo, it has remained in the family ever since. An old Lwalwa mask, less cubist than classic Ngongo masks. The volumes are powerful, the eyes finely sculpted, the nose very wide. A pastille in relief is engraved on each temple. The chin is pierced with several holes, probably once used to attach a beard. Superb deep, shiny patina. An old collector's label glued to the forehead.
