Early 20th century FRENCH school after Bertel THORVALDSEN (1770-1844) Portrait of Emperor Napoleon I Created circa 1830. White marble bust. RELATED LITERATURE: Elena di Majo, Bjarne Jornaes, Bertel Thorvaldsen, scultore danese a Roma, cat. exp. Rome, Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderne, October 31, 1989-January 28, 1990, model listed under no. 65, pp. 200-201. Rome-based neoclassical sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen created a posthumous portrait of Napoleon I in 1828, commissioned by Scottish collector Alexander Murray. The sculptor idealized the portrait of the Emperor, to whom he attributed antique elements, the eagle of Victory and the palms of Glory.
