HANDACHI, shinogi zukuri blade, 72 cm nagasa; hardening line sambon sugi ; nakago, pierced with a mekugi ana, and signed on one side Yamato no Kami Minamoto Kanenobu saku (17th-century blacksmith from Mino province), on the other side engraved with a gold inlay, for a cutting test performed on a body at hip level (Riyo Kuruma) by Yamano Kantaro Nagatsugu in August of the 4th year of Kanbun - 1664 -. The later handachi frame, shakudo kogai decorated with a bird of prey catching a monkey, signed Goto workshop (L. 21 cm); mokko-gata tsuba in tetsu, inlaid with silver and copper, decorated with leaves, work of the Heian-jo or Higo workshops (H. 8.5 cm).
PROVENANCE: acquired by the current owner's great-grandfather, General Etienne de Villaret, then at the beginning of his career as military attaché to the Japanese embassy in Tokyo, at the end of the 19th century, and in the family by descent.
