HANDACHI, shinogi zukuri blade, 68 cm nagasa. The nakago is pierced with a mekugi ana, and signed Joshu Mito ju Naoe Sukemasa (Naoe Suke masa living in Mito, Hitachi province), and dated in the 9th year of Bunka (Bunka kyû nen hachi gatsu jitsu, i.e. 1812). Later handachi frame, tsuka decorated with menuki in the shape of a monogamous turtle; mokko-gata tsuba in tetsu decorated with pines, crabs and waves, the kozuka and kogaï hitsu filled in, H. 8 cm
Edo period (1603- 1868).
PROVENANCE: acquired by the current owner's great-grandfather, General Etienne de Villaret, then at the beginning of his career as military attaché to the Japanese embassy in Tokyo, at the end of the 19th century, and in the family by descent.
