HACHIWARI IN SHIBUICHI with gold, silver and shakudo takamaki-e decoration of floral motifs. Signature on the saya Yoshimasa followed by a kao. The hachiwari is signed Seiryuken Yoshimasa followed by a Kakihan; the blade is protected by a wooden cover. Japan, Meiji period (1868-1912). Total closed length 31 cm PROVENANCE: acquired by the current owner's great-grandfather, General Etienne de Villaret, then in the early stages of his career as military attaché to the Japanese embassy in Tokyo at the end of the 19th century, and in the family by descent.
